Before everyone enjoys their wonderful long weekend, we have a few things to share. First of all, thank you to everyone who attended the Social event at Fifth Street Bar and Grill, it was a blast! We enjoyed all the great conversations, so thank you for to everyone who made it out.

February is going by so quickly already, and with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, YWiB wants to remind everyone just how much we appreciate the little things in life. We have decided to do random acts of kindness, and hand out candy grams around campus and on the street, letting everyone know that YWiB loves you!  In addition to handing out candy grams, don’t forget to hashtag #YWiBlovesyou on Valentine’s Day to spread and share the love!

Don’t forget! Our Get Connected 2013 Networking event is also at the end of February, and we are thrilled. This is the main event of the year, and we encourage ALL members to attend. We have partnered up with The Verch Group from Raymond James for this event on February 25th. We will be mingling with local professionals, and learning about their experiences in the business world. This is always a great opportunity for future endeavors, so bring your business cards and your wonderful personalities, and let’s make it a memorable event! Non-members are welcome!

YWiB is so excited to announce we will be attending the Women’s Day event- Real Women, Real Success put on by Sybil Verch, branch and portfolio manager for the Verch Group out of Raymond-James. Dress for Success

Dress for Success was definitely a success this year!

We’d like to start with a big thank-you to our speaker this year, Lindsay Myron, who gave us tons of great tips and tricks for how to dress appropriately in the many business-related situations we may find ourselves in.

One thing that we can really take away from Lindsay’s speech is to always dress on the conservative side if you are unsure of what would be appropriate. As Lindsay put it, it is always better to be dressed more conservatively and “business formal” than to be wearing something inappropriate or too “casual” for the situation. Even something subtle such as your bright pink nails could have someone remember you for your nails and not for your qualifications. However, it is important to keep in mind what you are dressing for – Lindsay gave a great example of when she dressed more “fashionably” when for a particular interview at the Bay Center shopping mall.

We are also so grateful to Aritzia in Mayfair Mall for providing us with our location for the event and the opportunity to have some shopping time for ourselves! We hope the ladies who made purchases that evening enjoy their new clothes.

We hope everyone learned as much as we did at this event!

Message from the Presidents:

We hope that everyone has been enjoying the last few weeks of the semester, we know that we are happy it is almost over! As most of you know, we attended Beyond Pink, hosted by the Westin Bayshore in the beautiful city of Vancouver with 6 YWiB UVic members! This is the first year that YWiB UVic was able to attend Beyond Pink with such a strong team attendance and we can only hope for the numbers to grow for next year.

As we have come back to reality on the island, we have had time to reflect on our experiences throughout the conference, build on the new relationships created, and retell the stories we heard from BP. It is not a coincidence that YWiB has grown to 3 university chapters in BC with YWiB Vancouver continuing to spread the #ywiblove to all up-and-coming women in the community, both on the mainland and here on the island!

If you missed out on BP this year, here are a few things we learned over the weekend and hope that you will take with you along your travels:

  •  Take risks. Your life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to fail. Learn from your mistakes. The fearful are caught as often as the bold. You would be surprised at how forgiving people are. Be honest with your mistakes. Your failures are your learning points. Be a leader. Be accountable. Celebrate successes.
  • Tori Holmes – an incredible woman who rowed across the Atlantic. 86 days of two hours of sleep and two hours of rowing, back and forth. Absolutely crazy. Read more on her story in her book, Crossing the Swell.
  • Set goals. Envision yourself in 10 years. What can you do in the next year, the next 5 years, to achieve those goals?

A YWiB UVic member, Diana Thom attended BP and here are her insights from the conference!
Q: Why did you attend BP?
A: I felt I could learn some beneficial things from women who have built their careers in the business world.
Q: What was your favourite workshop, and why?
A:I loved Carrie Gallant’s 7 Platinum Rules in Negotiation, because I learned I’m allowed to say no and I don’t have to please everyone all the time.
Q: Who was your favourite speaker, and why?
A: Tori Holmes – her speech was so inspiring! If I start to complain about something, I think, “wait, my ribs aren’t broken in the middle of the Atlantic!?”
Q: What is the one thing you learned from BP?
A: I can control my future, and that is it ok to be unique and especially, yourself.
- “I would definitely attend again next year.”

Thank you to everyone who has supported us during the semester, we cannot wait to see you all in January for a new year! Be sure to keep an eye out in your inboxes for updates for next semester. Good luck on exams everyone!

Love from your Presidents,
Amanda and Anthea
