YWiB UBC’s Internship Program

The YWiB UBC Internship Program provides members with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience through attaining internships with well established Vancouver companies. With a focus on hand selected small local businesses, interns gain hands-on experience working in the industry of their choice. All interns are prepared for their placements by taking part in a workshop series where they gain a variety of technical and soft skills.

Want to learn more? Keep these dates in mind:

Info Session: February 7th, 1-2pm in Henry Angus Room 235.

Info Booth: February 10th, 11-3 pm in first floor Henry Angus.

In addition, there will also be a 10-15 intro to the Internship Program right before our Sweet Speed Networking event. Come by Henry Angus 254 on February 9th at 5:30 pm.

Applications will be accepted starting on February 7 and the deadline will be on February 21.

Sweet Speed Networking

Prepare yourselves for a great opportunity to network with business professionals from a variety of sectors!

Our Sweet Speed Networking event will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on February 9th in Angus 254.

The event itself will be starting at 6 pm, however we will be having an information session in the same room at 5:30 pm. The info session will be for our upcoming Internship Program – a YWiB exclusive program that attracts almost all of our members. Be sure to drop by to find out more!

Immediately afterwards we’ll start our Sweet Speed Networking event! The networking will be done ‘speed dating style‘ meaning that you will have roughly 10 minutes with each professional. Once your 10 minutes is up, it’s time to rotate! Although the official event ends at 8 pm, you will have time to mingle afterwards.

Cost:
FREE for members
$5 for non-members
OR you can pay the $15 membership fee, granting you access to this event as well as all of YWiB’s programs coming up.

Business casual

Entrepreneurship Panel

We are pleased to say we have finally been able to reschedule the event! It will now be held on March 7th in Buchanan A102 from 6 – 8 pm. Wanting to become an entrepreneur? Or maybe you just have questions regarding the topic?

All will be answered at YWiB’s Entrepreneurship Panel! It will be happening this Wednesday, January 18th at 6 pm in Woodwards 1.

We are very excited to have five panelists this year who are distinguished local entrepreneurs from a variety of sectors! Panelists include:

Nikolas Laufer-Edel

Nikolas Laufer-Edel started his first business in elementary school running birthday parties for neighbourhood children and has been brining ideas to life ever since. Fascinated by technology Nikolas launched his own consulting business after graduating from the Sauder School of Business where he acted as an intrepreneur for clients; ranging from developing a high-end ecommerce patform to designing an online banking system.
Recently Nikolas has joined Matygo, a web startup that’s building the future of online classes, where he leads product design and marketing.
As a student Nikolas co-founded the largest business case competition in Western Canada, JDC West. While auditing the Entrepreneurship program at the University of Victoria Nikolas wrote the winning business plan for the venture-backed sports team management company TeamPages.
Actively pursing an interest in communications has led Nikolas to working as the presentation specialist for TEDxVancouver, teaching presentations design workshops at UBC, and coaching students for case competitions.

Paulina Lipska

Paulina graduated from the Sauder School of Business at UBC in December 2009, majoring in Finance and Accounting. In 2008, she was a Founding Director of Young Women in Business (YWiB) and has since remained the organization’s President. YWiB is a non-profit society for emerging female leaders in Western Canada. The network acts as the central forum to connect ambitious young women from a variety of careers, industries, and backgrounds.

Paulina is currently part of the Minerva Leadership Committee and chairs the Internship Committee. In her role with Minerva she assisted in a financial review of the operations and designed an internal internship program.

By day, she works at KPMG Vancouver, focused on Industrial Markets clients, and is in her last months of completing her Chartered Accountant designation. In 2010, Paulina was the award recipient of the National Leadership Award from KPMG for her significant community contributions.

Her Big Hairy Audacious Goal is to create a support network that allows every young woman to identify her passion and values and help her apply her skills and knowledge to bettering the communities around her.

Debra Lykkemark

President and Founder of Culinary Capers, Debra Lykkemark oversees a high energy staff who share a passion for fine food. In Debra’s own words, “Our goal is to provide the best cuisine, service and décor to all our customers. We are dedicated to producing delicious food accompanied with personal service”.

Debra served on the International Caterers Association Executive Board from 1997 to 2005, including two years as President. As President of the ICA, she completely revamped the Washington office and left the organization in a strong financial position at the end of her term. Debra has been a highly regarded and frequent featured speaker at the top special event conferences throughout North America, including the Special Event, Event Solutions, Catersource, NACE and the ICA. She is active in Les Dames d’Escoffier, the Entrepreneurs’ Organization, the International Special Events Society and the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs. Her local speaking engagements include business and women’s groups and guest appearances before students in hospitality and culinary programs.

She was selected as the 2004 Consumer’s Choice Vancouver Business Woman of the Year. In 2005, Debra was the recipient of an Influential Woman in Business Award presented by Business in Vancouver. She has been featured as one of Canada’s top 100 women business owners by Profit magazine and Culinary Capers was ranked 21st in the 2011 edition. Debra was invited to join the organizing committee of the British Columbia Cancer Foundation’s Inspiration Gala from 2007 through 2011 and was instrumental in helping to raise a record breaking amount of funds for cancer research.

Tina Lum

She graduated from the UBC Commerce Majored in Transportation and Logistics 2009.

After graduation, she started at Pepsi Bottling Group in their Management Trainee Program.Within six months, she resigned and started a seafood import/export company in 2009.  In their first year they grew the company to over $1.3 million in sales.

In April 2010, she co-founded RentGeek.com a personalized apartment site.  Recently, they raised over $150,000 in seed funding from angel investors.

Andy Nguyen

Andy Nguyen is a Sauder School of Business alumnus and is the co-founder of Corporate Champions Vancouver.Andy graduated with honours from UBC with a double major in Logistics and Marketing. In his spare time he loves to follow the tech industry, play soccer player and cycle. His five year plan includes completing an Olympic distance triathlon and spreading the Corporate Champions Vancouver concept across Canada.

Stressed Beyond Belief? YWiB Has Your Back!

It’s that time of year where everybody has a lot going on. Some still have exams and papers due before the end of term. Some already have upcoming finals looming over their heads. Some people have work or extra involvement in addition to all this. Are you getting nervous just reading this?

Now Hiring!

We are extending the deadline for the Downtown Career Tours Coordinator and the Mentorship Program Coordinator positions. We will be accepting these applications until 11:59 pm on Wednesday, November 16th.

Then maybe a coordinator position would be right for you! Here are the current positions we are hiring for:

Mentorship Program Coordinator

The Mentorship Program Coordinator leads their committee in overseeing the secondary school membership program. Duties include acting as liaison with the secondary schools, recruiting mentors (including providing orientations) and mentees, and planning monthly events with the committee.

Internship Program Coordinator

The Internship Program Coordinator, along with their committee, seeks out partnerships with companies looking for interns and subsequently acts as liaison between the companies and students. Duties include interviewing members looking to participate in the program as well as providing training and information sessions for selected members. See a more detailed description here.

Downtown Career Tours Coordinator

The Downtown Career Tours Coordinator oversees their committee in the planning and execution of tours. Duties include seeking out companies to participate in the program as well as planning all logistics involved with the tours.

You’re invited to YWiB UBC’s 4th Annual Launch Party!

Come and join us on September 27th for a night of networking and entertainment that will give you a taste of YWiB UBC and the YWiB network.

Not a young woman? Not in business? No problem! YWiB welcomes men and women across all faculties.

The launch party jump starts September and is a time to get new (and old) members excited about YWiB and what we have in store for the new year.

Last year’s Launch  was a great success and current Vice President of YWiB UBC, Crystal Chu, described it as a “full blown fashion night-out” and continued to say “We featured local boutiques such as OhKuol, LYNNSteven and Wish.list and showcased their upcoming collections with a fashion show.”

Big names from last year’s Launch who dropped by to share their success stories included Judy Brooks from Blo Blow Dry Bar and Arpen Thandi from Crave Vancouver who is now with popchips.

When asked what the best part of last year’s Launch was, Crystal had this to say: “The clothes, the goodie bags and of course the people!

This year’s launch party is a convention styled event that will feature various businesses from around Vancouver. Come out and support your local businesses as well mingle with industry professionals. You will also be able to meet the lovely YWiB Exec team and get the inside scoop on all our events and programs for the upcoming year.
